Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Writer: UshUsh

Just over a month ago I started a new ‘diet’ … I put diet into quote marks because I actually hate this term! So, actually lets call it a lifestyle!

Just over a month ago I started a new lifestyle to see if I could shift this final 10kg that keeps sticking around. I’d tried intermittent fasting before but was never on a caloric deficit so actually last time it really didn’t work for me.

Many people out there who do IF will say they do 16:8 and stick to their calories and lose weight… Well, good for them, that didn’t work for me.

So, I’m on a caloric deficit of about 35% this is to kick start that furnace inside me to burn fat… Add some IF into that and it’s like putting lighter fluid on that fire! In 1 month I’ve lost 4kg (If you don’t play metric, in imperial thats a like 8.8lbs) WOAH GIRL!

And finally, I’ve started getting those comments again ‘you’re looking great’, ‘there will be nothing left of you’… more fool them, because actually there is plenty of me to go around! So now I have 6kg to go… After that I’ll figure out if I want to get into some athletic sport or body building (lol me? On stage? In a bikini…? Urm no thanks!)

Anyhoo, so I thought I’d share some of the benefits I’ve been feeling and some tips if you’re looking to get started!

Benefits of IF

Did you know there are loads of different types of IF lifestyles you could follow, 5:2 | 16:8 | 14:10 or make up your own!

What does fasting do for you:

It gives you ENERGY: I kid you not, each morning you’ll find me waking up before my trusty sunrise alarm clock, eagar to get out of bed and get on with my day… This has never happened before! I’m shocked!

I’m sleeping better: Yup solid 7-8 hours a night and I feel refreshed after a good nights sleep!

I’m not bloated: belly is in, back doesn’t seem too fluffy … I mean, that could do with the 4kg I’ve dropped, but just generally I don’t feel like im retaining water!

Lighter period: yes! Can you believe it, my period this month was like 3 days max, I didn’t get a crazy heavy flow either… It was lovely, and perfect and light!

Less Emotions therefore less emotional eating: I haven’t got take out, I haven’t binged, yes I’ve still had some chocolate (every single day) and I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine… But in general I’m all good in that hood!

Happy Happy Ush!

What about your Tips Ush?  Yes I’m coming to them.

Tip 1: Choose the right fast for you. I do 16:8 which means I eat between 12 and 8 only.

Tip 2: Stick to your caloric allowance / deficit within your eating window… This will encourage faster weight loss.

Tip 3: Start by simply removing breakfast from your day and see how you feel. Continue to drink water, mint tea, green tea if you want. If that works for a few days then don’t eat your 11 ‘o’ clock snack and eat lunch at 12 instead!

Tip 4: Ensure it fits your lifestyle… for example if you don’t get home until 8pm and can’t eat before 9pm don’t promise yourself that 12 – 8 is your eating window.

Tip 5: If you get hungry DRINK WATER or TEA or COFFEE (No sugar!)

Tip 6: If you’re doing IF for weight loss… DON’T weigh yourself every day – stick to once a week!

Tip 7: Fast during the working week and eat breakkie on weekends if that works for you… Personally I’ve started fasting 6 out of 7 days a week… It’s random, but one day a week I get hungry before 10am…  So I eat, it’s never a specific day either! Strange!

Tip 8: If like me you love eggs, then make your first meal BRUNCH! Yup – Just have them eggs at 12, why the hell not… If one things for certain at least you’ll be fasting ‘On Trend!’

And there you have it, the benefits and tips of IF! Let me know if you’ve got anymore, I’d love to hear them…

Wishing you health and love
